Funding Opportunity for Transportation, Logistics, Urban Issues
The UPS Endowment Fund at Stanford was established in 1971 with a generous gift from the United Parcel Service. The intent of the endowment fund is to provide support for programs in transportation and logistics education, and urban planning education and research. This may include urban problems such as social, economic, environmental, technological, and public policy questions. Funding is available to support new programs, to enlarge existing programs, or it can be used in limited circumstances to provide summer salary for junior faculty.
In 2022, we expect to provide up to $500,000 in new awards. A limited number of two-year awards may be made. Individual grant size will vary, but most individual grants will be between $35,000 and $50,000. Funds will be made available after September 1, 2022.
Guidelines:
Stanford faculty from the Schools of Earth Sciences, Engineering, Humanities and Sciences, Law, and the Graduate Schools of Business and Education are encouraged to submit proposals. There is a strong preference given to proposals from junior faculty or to faculty who do not have existing UPS funding.
Proposals should focus on instruction and/or research involving urban issues related to transportation, logistics, society, economics, environment, technology, or public policy. Examples of appropriate topics include:
infrastructure planning and revitalization
water resources planning and management
urban housing, crime, multiculturalism, community development
international urban economic development
urban environmental problems
urban and regional transportation planning
Priority will be given to proposals:
submitted by junior faculty members
bringing matching funds and/or including plans for post-UPS funding
involving curricular development
demonstrating interdisciplinary and collaborative themes
addressing important urban issues
using this money as seed funding
submitted by faculty who have not received support in the last three years from the UPS Fund
Proposals can request one-time or two-year funding. All proposals must include a budget plan within the two-page limit.
Recipients are required to produce an annual report for stewardship purposes.

Submit a two-page proposal in pdf formal titled UPS2023_Lastname_Firstinitial.pdf to Brendan Walsh at walshbm@stanford.edu.
