CTL Teaching Advancement Grants (Fall 2023)

Teaching Advancement Grant Goals

The Teaching Advancement Grant is offered by CTL for up to $2500. It is available to Stanford faculty, lecturers, instructional teams, and departments. These one-time grants are meant to fund projects that serve as springboards for the exploration, design, and implementation of new or improved pedagogical approaches in courses and educational programs that support learning for Stanford students.

Applications may fall into one of two categories:

1. Pedagogical development for Stanford students: Enhance teaching development for graduate or undergraduate students, including hiring students to co-plan courses, develop pedagogy courses, and support research or evaluation of teaching practices.

2. Support for conferences and speakers: Support for attending pedagogy conferences together with sharing insights back to Stanford community, especially home department. Can also be used to bring an expert to Stanford to teach about pedagogy research and practices. Maximum support is $1,000, and is only available when departmental/program funds are either unavailable or insufficient.

Grants are available from the start of term to August 31st (end of University's fiscal year). We encourage applications for courses ahead of their implementation quarter, for instance applying for a Fall grant to fund development of a Winter quarter course.

Criteria

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following:

• Grant Goals – How do the goals of your proposed work align with the Teaching Advancement Grant goals?

• IDEAL (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access in a Learning Community) – In what ways will the proposed work support Stanford’s IDEAL values?

• Impact on Stanford Students – How can this effort inform other teaching and learning activities in your department/program? To what extent can the results of this proposal impact learners at Stanford and beyond?

• Assessment/Evaluation – How will you measure if your project is successful? How will the proposed work assess how well the grant goals are being met? How will you gather and analyze this information/data?

• Sustainability – How will the effects of your project be maintained or extended (e.g. over future iterations in your course)? What funding structures are in place to support this project beyond the end of the grant cycle?

Proposals that incorporate one or more of the following are especially encouraged:

• Collaboration – How will the proposed work bring together departments, programs, or organizations?

• Co-sponsorship – How will your department/program work with CTL to support your proposed work?

Examples of proposals the TAG is designed to support:

• Hiring a graduate student to co-develop a course or teaching and learning materials for a course

• Fund the production of a workshop to develop instructor pedagogical skills

• Fund materials for a pilot of a teaching innovation that will be supported by one’s department/program if determined to be successful in improving student learning

• Pay for student assistants to help analyze course data to inform learning and assessments in a class

Examples of proposals the TAG is NOT designed to support:

• Paying an instructor to develop their own courses
• Funding over multiple course offerings (i.e. purchasing of course materials every year)
• Funding for one-off workshops or programs that will not be repeated and sustained
• TA-ships
• Production of instructional videos
• Web development

Stanford Departments, Programs, Instructional Teams, Individual Faculty and Lecturers, Postdocs, Graduate Students

Deliverables

Upon completion of the project, you will be asked to submit a report of roughly 450 words to let us know how you and your department benefited from the grant, or what insights might be relevant to the wider teaching community at Stanford. Applicants must describe how they plan to share what they have learned, materials developed, resources acquired, etc. with the Stanford community.

Deadlines

Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis. The deadline for the Spring 2023 round of grants is March 10, 2023 at 5:00pm.
