A Cardinal Capstone is a community-engaged experience in which students apply their cumulative academic knowledge to address community needs while demonstrating the relevance of a course of study to complex social and environmental challenges. The Community Engaged Learning and Research team supports instructors developing opportunities that bring community-engaged learning into capstone courses, programs, and projects.
Cardinal Capstone Innovation Grants
Cardinal Capstone Innovation Grants provide funding to help undergraduate programs and departments develop, expand, or pilot community-engaged capstone experiences.
Applications open in mid-October. Review deadlines for the 2026-27 academic year are November 11, 2026, and February 17, 2027.
How can the funds be used?
Planning Grants: Support development of new or expanded capstone experiences, including graduate student assistance, community partner honoraria, transportation, and instructor compensation for curriculum and project development.
Implementation Bridge Grants: Support launching or expanding capstone courses or integrating community-engaged projects into existing capstones. Funds may support student staff, transportation, project materials, community partner honoraria, and food for community events. These grants supplement, rather than replace, departmental funding.
