SUMS Seed Grant Request for Proposals
Overview: The objectives of the SUMS Seed Grants are to encourage new mass spectrometry projects and new methodologies, and to generate pilot data in support of research proposals to external funding agencies. Exciting, groundbreaking research happens where different fields, technologies and knowledge come together.
Projects in support of emerging mass spectrometry-related research areas, early phase investigations, and preliminary data for extramural proposals will be given priority.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss projects with SUMS staff before proposal submission.
- Assisting PIs to incorporate mass spectrometry into their research
- Supporting the application of our existing capabilities to emerging research areas
- Developing new workflows with our existing instrumentation base to advance research
- Helping PIs generate preliminary data to use in proposals for larger research grants
Stanford University Academic Council members and Medical Center Line (MCL) faculty. Projects must be new to SUMS, rather than a continuation of an existing project with SUMS. One proposal per PI.
Request up to $5,000. Matching funds are required, minimum 1:1. The funding will be applied toward SUMS user fees. Additional funding beyond the match for reagents, materials, cell culture, etc. can also be mentioned as appropriate. Awardees will present their seed projects at the annual SUMS Research Applications Symposium.
Proposals should be concise and practical – the equivalent of 2 pages total (do not strive to use up the entire character limit for each section!) organized as follows:
1. PI, and PI lab lead contact
2. Project Title
3. Project background and significance (up to 1500 characters)
4. Seed project goals (up to 1500 characters)
5. Experimental design, methods (up to 4000 characters)
6. Budget (up to 500 characters)

Required: requested seed funds ($5K max) & minimum 1:1 PI matching funds. The combined funds will be applied solely toward SUMS staff & instrument time

Optional: Additional PI lab investment – supplies, reagents, etc. – which does not count toward the PI matching
7. Timeline for project start and completion (up to 128 characters)
8. Prospective outcomes, e.g. potential for future mass spec-based work, broadly useful methodology, sharing a unique approach, new application area, publications, presentations, preliminary data for external grant proposal (up to 500 characters)
Maximum seed request is $5,000. Matching funds are required, minimum 1:1. The combined funds will be applied toward SUMS shared resource user fees, to cover instrument and staff time.
