Stanford Medicine Children’s Health Center for IBD and Celiac Disease Postdoctoral and Early Career Support Award
The Stanford Medicine Children’s Health Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Celiac Disease Postdoctoral and Early Career Support Award will fund research postdoctoral fellows and instructors to conduct innovative mentored research in pediatric IBD and celiac disease. The program aims to 1) motivate and train the next generation of pediatric IBD and celiac disease researchers and 2) position awardees to be successful applicants for future extramural career development or independent funding.
This year, our Center's priority is to fund more grants focused on celiac disease. We welcome applications that employ diverse scientific approaches to advance our understanding of this condition.
FUNDING AMOUNT
- Postdoctoral Fellows - $90,000/year, up to 2 years
- This award supports a postdoc’s salary and fringe benefits up to a maximum of $90,000. Any remaining gap of your salary will need to be covered by your mentor.
- Instructors - $100,000/year, up to 2 years
- The instructor funding mechanism requires a commitment to devoting a minimum of 75% full-time professional effort to the research outlined in your proposal. The award covers up to $100,000 of your base salary plus fringe benefits in salary support. Any remaining gap of your salary as an awardee will need to be covered by your division. A signed letter of support from the department chair or division chief is required
Note: Clinical fellows (MD or equivalent) training in a clinical fellowship program should not apply through this funding mechanism.
General Eligibility
- All applicants must have, or plan on, having a focus on pediatric IBD and celiac disease research.
- All applicants and their Primary Research Mentors much be SMCH Center for IBD and Celiac Disease Members. Failure to apply for membership will result in the application process being withheld.
- A Primary Research Mentor must be identified for postdoctoral fellows and instructors.
- All applicants must have legal residence in the United States (Applicants with H or J visas are eligible).
- All applicants must have a postdoctoral or instructor appointment date effective no later than the application deadline.
- The following are not eligible:
- Clinical Instructors
- Clinician Educators (CEs)
- Visiting scholars to Stanford
- Senior Research Scientists, Research Associates/Assistants
- Former recipients of SMCH Center for IBD and Celiac Disease-sponsored awards who have not complied with award/reporting requirements. Mentor or applicants who have overdraft(s) in previous awards that are not cleared prior to applying are not eligible.
Eligibility: Postdoctoral Fellows and Instructors
This grant provides salary support, including fringe benefits, for postdoctoral fellows and instructors in support of a specific project related to maternal and/or child health with a focus on pediatric IBD and celiac disease research. Medical fellows (MD or equivalent) training in a clinical fellowship program should not apply through this funding mechanism.
- Eligibility is for all PhD postdoctoral fellows and MD and/or PhD instructors. Clinical instructors are not eligible to apply.
- Applicants who completed a first post-doctoral fellowship at an institution not affiliated with Stanford University and wish to pursue a second post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University in a scientific area different from their first post-doctoral fellowship are eligible.
- Postdoc projects resulting in a shift from adjacent research to pediatric IBD and celiac disease research in the mentor’s lab, are encouraged.
- Instructors applying for this funding mechanism are required to submit a signed letter of support from the department chair or division chief.
- Resubmissions shall be limited to one.
- Funding for year two is not guaranteed and subject to review of progress and career plans and documentation of the awardee’s application for external funding.
The primary research mentor must be one of the following:
- MD, MD/PhD, or PhD whose primary focus is maternal and/or child health research.
- MD, MD/PhD, or PhD who wishes to expand his/her interest in maternal and/or child health research.
- The mentor should be at the Assistant Professor rank or above with a track record as a research mentor.
Additionally, the primary research mentor and applicant must also be a Member of the Stanford Medicine Children’s Health Center for IBD and Celiac Disease. The mentor must meet one of the following categories:
- Primary IBD or celiac disease focus in basic, translational, clinical, or population research. Evidence of a primary focus includes:
- Relevant, peer-reviewed funding from a national funding agency
- Significant contribution to clinical research (e.g., PI on trials, writing investigator-initiated trials, enrolling large numbers of patients in clinical trials, contributing significantly to publications involving clinical trials)
- High-level accomplishments in IBD or celiac disease- related publications and presentations relative to peer group
- Support education/training or outreach in an IBD or celiac disease- related discipline
- Extensive collaboration with, and intellectual contribution to IBD- and celiac disease- focused research
- Emerging or relevant research to IBD- or celiac disease- focus in basic, translational, clinical, or population research and/or makes significant contributions to the research of Center members
- IBD or celiac disease- focused clinical activities, including:
- Providing clinical care for significant numbers of IBD or celiac disease patients
- Enrolling patients in IBD or celiac disease clinical trials (but not as PI or trial author)
Research must be primarily related to maternal and child health with a focus on pediatric IBD and celiac disease research. Child refers to the expectant mother, oocyte, zygote, embryo, fetus, infant, child, and adolescent. All areas of research are eligible: basic, translational, clinical research, epidemiology/statistics, informatics, health services, or health policy.
