COVID-19 & International Travel Update (May 2020): Given the unpredictability of international travel for the foreseeable future, please indicate in your application how proposed activities might be adjusted to accommodate travel restrictions or the need to conduct work remotely.
This call for proposals is intended to provide funds for faculty to pursue new or existing international research goals. The purpose of the fund is to help faculty expand their international network of researchers through early-stage research projects. The funds are sponsored by the Office of International Affairs "Roberta and Steve Denning International Research Exploration Fund."
Since 2013, the International Research Exploration Fund has enabled faculty to address numerous international research challenges they encounter. Examples of challenges that the fund has helped with include:
bringing international research colleagues to Stanford
traveling to the field to work with international research colleagues and accelerate partnerships, including co-editing publications
bringing graduate students into the field to assist with and expand research goals.
What we'll ask reviewers to score highly
Proposals will be reviewed by Stanford faculty members representing several schools. In line with the scope of the fund, following is a list of criteria that reviewers will prioritize in the selection of the winners. A proposal might include one or more of these but there is no expectation that a proposal should include all.
an innovative approach to address your international research challenge or to advance your international research goal
opportunities for graduate students to participate in your international research project through an activity you mentor
a persuasive case that your project could catalyze further engagement from internal and external stakeholders.
Note: your proposal does not have to have all of the above. In fact, it would be very hard to come up with a proposal that would accomplish all of this considering the maximum amount of funding available per award! Reviewers will be prioritizing quality over quantity.
For examples of proposals that the Office of International Affairs has awarded in previous rounds, click here. If you are not familiar with the Office of International Affairs, here's where you can learn about services we have for faculty who do international research.
For proposals of comparable merit, priority will be given to those faculty who have updated their Stanford Profile with their international research. If you are not sure what that is, feel free to reach out and we'll help you get started with a Stanford Profile before you apply for this opportunity.
We plan to award up to six proposals. We’ll seek to support all applicants, regardless of whether they receive an award, to accomplish their international research goals through the various services of our office.
Faculty who are members of the Academic Council or faculty from the Medical Center Line. This call is open to all faculty from all of the Stanford schools. Faculty members who have an active OIA grant are not eligible.

How can the funds be used?
Funds may be used for travel including transportation, living expenses (lodging, food, incidentals), both for bringing international collaborator(s) to Stanford and for outbound faculty and graduate student researchers. The funding may NOT be used for teaching or administrative salaries, tuition, insurance or health/welfare benefits but could be used to pay for an honorarium for non-Stanford research collaborators.
Funds need to be spent or returned to sponsor one year from date of transfer.
